About Etching

An etching is produced by drawing with a

needle on a metal plate that has been
covered with a "ground” , thus exposing the
metal in desired areas.Next the plate is
placed in an acid bath.

The acid "bites lines into the plate where
the plate is not covered by the ground.

After the plate is etched the plate is cleaned

and then covered with a thick, tacky ink that

is forced into the etched lines.

After the ink is wiped from the surface of

the plate leaving ink in the incised lines,

the plate is printed on an etching press

producing one etching. For each additional

etching the plate must be reinked reprinted,

taking both time and skill. Most printers print
limited editions then sign and number each

etching.
