An etching is produced by drawing with a |
| |
needle on a metal plate that has been |
|
covered with a "ground” , thus exposing the |
|
metal in desired areas.Next the plate is |
|
placed in an acid bath. |
| |
The acid "bites lines into the plate where |
|
the plate is not covered by the ground. |
| |
After the plate is etched the plate is cleaned |
| |
and then covered with a thick, tacky ink that |
| |
is forced into the etched lines. |
| |
After the ink is wiped from the surface of |
| |
the plate leaving ink in the incised lines, |
| |
the plate is printed on an etching press |
| |
producing one etching. For each additional |
| |
etching the plate must be reinked reprinted, |
| |
taking both time and skill. Most printers print |
|
limited editions then sign and number each |
| |
etching. |
